It has been a while since my last update. Thankfully, I have been busy enjoying this beautiful weather and playing in the dirt. Some major changes have come about since the last report, some good, some bad. You know how is goes sometimes.
The egg carton thing we saw not working out earlier, well, it just didn't work out at all. I could think of a few ways to have improved that process but weighing convenience vs. saving a dime, sometimes there is too much sweat equity in a project to make it worthwhile. The process and what led up to the end result could take up an entire post of its own so I am going to stick with the most important part for now.. A week or so ago I had to get rid of several hundred healthy viable seedlings due to a contamination of an unknown variety. Turns out that used egg cartons can harbor nasties that can contaminate your plants and your soil as well. I'm not sure that this is the case but something gross was growing on top of the soil and on the cartons that I could not identify. When in doubt, throw it out. All of those seedlings and egg cartons have been destroyed.
The good news is that I have seeded nearly twice as much as I had before and some of my replacements are now breaking through the soil.. along with a few extra things I dropped in there. Right now I have collards, blanket flower, black-eyed susan, salvia, snow-in-summer, maiden pinks, baby's breath, painted daisies, catnip, and achillea. I can see other things making little bumps in the soil trying to push up too so.. yeah.. I almost cried as I saw my former crop go up in flames but it's all good. Everything is going to be a little late but most importantly, it's going to be.
As far as our garden boxes and retaining wall and every other numerous project we are involved in.. those things have taken a back seat to some other priorities. We hope to have all of our boxes up in a temporary place for the season this weekend and have some of the beds planted. The retaining wall is going to have to wait until fall at least, now that we waited so long, but we still intend on pushing on with that.
So, that is about all I have to share for now. I did take some photos of the various items coming up around the yard and am in the process of putting together a slide show.. so look for that in the near future. Until then.. good luck and happy gardening!
